Fredericksburg Theater Company is seeking an experienced Managing Director to help lead our established community theater into its next chapter.

For nearly 30 years, we have been committed to producing high-quality theater, exceptional audience experiences, and a workplace where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

THE POSITION

The Managing Director is the Company's senior operational leader under the Executive Director and is responsible for the effective day-to-day management of the organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising, supporting, and holding staff accountable.

  • Developing and managing the annual operating budget.

  • Overseeing nonprofit financial reporting and fund accounting.

  • Managing facilities, scheduling, vendors, and daily operations.

  • Administering contracts with outside artists and production personnel.

  • Working with the Executive Director and production leadership to support successful productions.

  • Building strong relationships with donors, volunteers, artists, Board members, and community partners.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We seek a nonprofit arts professional with at least five years of experience who combines strong organizational and financial skills with excellent people skills.

You understand that effective leadership requires both encouragement and authority. You invest in the success of colleagues, communicate clearly, establish expectations, address problems directly, and make difficult decisions when necessary.

You believe organizational culture matters. We value professionalism, respect, teamwork, accountability, and a willingness to put the Company's mission ahead of individual agendas. We expect leaders to protect that culture.

You are comfortable with donors at every level and understand that stewardship is about relationships, not simply the size of a gift.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Five or more years of professional nonprofit arts experience.

  • Staff supervision and organizational management experience.

  • Experience developing and monitoring an annual budget.

  • Working knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting and financial reporting.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Good judgment, discretion, and follow-through.

 Preferred:

  • Performing arts or community theater experience.

  • Experience with artist contracts and production scheduling.

  • Donor relations or fundraising experience.

  • Nonprofit Board experience.

WHY THIS MATTERS

We believe a great community theater is defined not only by what happens on stage, but by how people are treated behind the scenes and how audiences, artists, staff, volunteers, and donors experience the organization.

If you want to help build an organization where excellence and respect are equally important, we would like to hear from you.
